Northwest Wrapping Up Soccer, Volleyball Seasons

Fall sports are starting to wrap up at ΑρΑ«Φ±²₯, with multiple teams making a strong push in the postseason.

The men’s soccer team earned a well-fought 3-2 NJCAA Region IX north first round playoff win on the road against Northeastern Junior College.

After falling behind 1-0 early, the Trappers responded with three straight goals from Matheus Macedo, Rennan DaSilva and Ryan Silva. The Plainsmen scored a goal to pull within 3-2 in the 79th minute, but Trapper goalie Marcus Olmos held Northeast scoreless from there, making eight saves in the game. Olmos ranks third in Region IX North with a .770 save percentage and is second among league goalies with a 1.55 goals against average.

It was Northwest’s first playoff win since 2012.

The Trappers (5-4-2) will now head south to Denver for the Region IX semifinals at Metro State University against Sheridan College (6-4-1). This season, Northwest lost 1-0 and tied 1-1 with Sheridan.

If Northwest wins Saturday, they will advance to the tournament championship Sunday.

Sergio Garcia Santamaria leads the team with five goals and 12 points on the season while Alejandro Fernandes has five assists.

Northwest volleyball will wrap up its regular season this weekend with two road matches against Laramie County Community College and Eastern Wyoming Community College.

The Trappers (13-11, 7-5 Region IX) swept their home finale weekend against Sheridan College (3-1) and Casper College (3-0) before splitting matches with Central Wyoming College (2-3) and Laramie Community College (3-1) last weekend.

Shania Warren leads the team and is third in Region IX North with 2.6 kills per set. She also has 216 kills on the season. Libero Geena Graf averages 3.48 digs per set and has 282 digs on the season.

The Trappers will play in the Region IX tournament in Cheyenne Oct. 31- Nov. 3.

ΑρΑ«Φ±²₯ (0-12-1) women’s soccer completed its season Oct. 13 with a 5-0 loss to Northeastern Junior College. Brandie Bedes led the team with three points on the season. Goalie Christina Lacek had a Region IX north division second 83 saves on the season with a sparkling .774 save percentage.
